September is Save the Koala Month, an important campaign dedicated to raising awareness about the plight of koalas and their declining population. This initiative focuses on highlighting the urgent need for conservation efforts to protect these iconic marsupials. The campaign seeks to highlight to the public about the threats koalas face, including habitat destruction, disease, and human activity, and encourages individuals and communities to take action in their preservation.

It’s estimated that there are less than 64000 koalas left in the wild, possibly as few as 40,000, and they’re now listed as an endangered species in QLD, NSW and the ACT. Our Brisbane New Civitas Lions Club supports the Queensland Koala Society in their efforts to rescue and rehabilitate koalas, with their latest project being to build an Education Centre to educate the public on the dangers koalas face, and to heighten awareness and engagement for creating a sustainable future when both koalas and their natural habitats can thrive.

What simple steps can we all take to protect one of our most endearing native animals?

  • Support Conservation Organisations: Donate to or volunteer with groups focused on koala protection and habitat restoration.

  • Advocate for Habitat Preservation: Contact local representatives to support policies that protect koala habitats and prevent deforestation.

  • Plant Native Trees: If you have space, plant eucalyptus trees to provide food and shelter for koalas.

  • Reduce Land Clearing: Avoid land clearing in your area and encourage sustainable land use practices.

  • Spread Awareness: Share information about koalas and their threats on social media or in your community to educate others.

  • Drive Carefully: Be mindful of wildlife crossing signs and reduce speed in areas where koalas are known to live to prevent road deaths.

  • Report Sightings: Notify local wildlife organisations if you see injured or sick koalas, or those that may be in imminent danger.

  • Choose Sustainable Products: Support brands that practice sustainable forestry and avoid products that contribute to habitat destruction.

  • Participate in Clean-Up Efforts: Join local clean-up events to remove litter from natural areas, which can help protect koalas and their habitats.

By making these small efforts, we can all contribute to the protection of koalas and their environment.
